Summer Roof Color Selection?

It has been a long and warm summer so far, but what about all those dark roofs being installed around the Portland, Beaverton and Tualatin areas? Wouldn’t their homes benefit from a nice light colored roof?

It has been a long and warm summer so far, but what about all those dark roofs being installed around the Portland, Beaverton and Tualatin areas? Wouldn’t their homes benefit from a nice light colored roof?

The answer is Yes. During the summer months a light colored roof can reduce the amount of heat attracted by these long sunny days. But two things are helping the darker roofs stay almost as cool …. updated ventilation and our cloudly and cool Winter, Fall, and Spring weather. The ideal roof color based on heat absorbtion is white, but it can also be the least attractive after years of algee and moss growth.

The most important aspect of choosing the right color is selecting the right ventilation system and making sure the homes attic can breathe. So go ahead and pick a color, even if it is black, just make sure your roofing contractor has installed a good venting system along with your new roof.
