Setting a Roof Appointment – Part III (cont.)

We left off in the last article at your roofing appointment and your salesperson’s inspection of your bath and kitchen ducting. The next area to examine is the insulation and soffit areas.
Insulation and Soffits: One of the most commonly found problems when looking in an attic is the insulation blocking the air intake vents – soffit vents. It is not unusual that when insulation was added, either when the house was built or later on as an add-on. With the attic lights turned off or your flashlight off, you should see light emanating from vents around the edges of where your roof and ceiling meet. If you don’t see light or only limited pockets, then you may not have adequate soffit venting or it’s covered up by the insulation. Note – sometimes the light can be hidden by a baffle holding the insulation back or a style of venting called an edge vent. Your roofing inspector can verify this for you.
This is also a good time to see if you have any other types of venting. If your house has gables, check to see if they have installed gable vents, what size and if there is a powervent installed in the attic side opening. All this information your salesperson is gathering will help them make the correct roofing recommendations later.
