What should I do to prepare for the installation of my new roof?

Having a new roof installed
can be a nerve racking experience for both you and your pets. It starts with
the arrival of large trucks, builds into an earthquake of noise and vibrations,
and often ends in a cloud of dust.
Having a new roof installed
can be a nerve racking experience for both you and your pets. It starts with
the arrival of large trucks, builds into an earthquake of noise and vibrations,
and often ends in a cloud of dust.
Start by making sure you
have a discussion and a plan with your roofing contractor regarding:
Use of the driveway and lawn
– from large trucks on the driveway, to lawn staging areas for material and
equipment.
Protecting the outside of the home from falling debris – including the siding, plants and shrubs, along with outdoor furniture.
Parking arrangement for trailers,
trucks and crew vehicles – will your garage be accessible and what times you
should discuss with your neighbors about your up coming roofing project (like
parking & noise).
Garage and attic debris – is
your garage open and susceptible to debris, is your homes attic used for
storage and can it be protected, and is your attic insulation
going to be covered in roofing debris?
Interior vibration and noise
– discuss which items should be taken down due to being a fall potential, which
areas may be prone to some interior cracking, and what level of noise to expect
if you work from home or have pets.
Discuss access to your home
– getting in and out may not be straightforward or safe. Make sure you have an
understanding on when, how and who to notify when entering or exiting your
home.
Clean up – when the job is
completed, what should you expect from your roofing contractor in terms of
clean-up around your homes exterior and interior (attic spaces and garage
area).
Some roof installations will
require very little planning and run smooth as silk, but most don’t. If you use
the list above to start your discussion with your roofing contractor, the odds
are in your favor you’ll end up content after the trucks roll out of your
drive-way.
