Do Water Tight Roofs and Skylights go Together?

Skylight and Roofing.JPG

That is a good roofing question with the typical answer of both Yes and No. Roofing companies and skylight companies have been installing many different styles and brands of skylight over many years. The roofing contractor that may offer this service or the skylight company that sells skylights and installs them needs to be very good at two services – roofing and skylights.

That’s the trick – finding a company who is a professional at both roofing and skylights. But to make it even trickier, often skylights are installed in existing roof structures where the old roofing must be tied into the new roof flashings of the skylight. That roof top installation is much more difficult and prone to leakage. So it is just like the famous peanut butter cups, you need two, two companies in one: a roofing contractor and a skylight company.

You could hire two companies  (roofing and skylight) and have them coordinate their installation together? However, you may find that getting that to work may be more work than your ready for. Also, the warranty responsiblity if there is a problem could turn out to be a real nightmere.

So here is the answer. Hire a roofing contractor who has years of experience installing skylights. Yes – you could hire a skylight company that has years of experience installing skylight into existing roof decks, but…. your best possibility for success is the most critical aspect of a failed installation – a leaking roof.

If your roofing contractor does not carry the selection of skylights you want, then work with them and a skylight provider to get the one you want. But let the roofing contractor install.
