It’s coming. No, not the rain yet, first the heat. And we are talking some real record setting temperatures. So what should you know about your roof during extreme days like the ones on the way?

It’s coming. No, not the rain yet, first the heat. And we are talking some real record setting temperatures. So what should you know about your roof during extreme days like the ones on the way?

Two things: Make sure your roofing / attic ventilation is open and functioning. If you have a roof or gable powervent, make sure it is working. Make sure your intake / soffit vents are clear of insulation. The goal is to keep the air moving through the attic from the soffits (cooler air) out through the roof peaks.

Second thing: Stay off the roof. Most composition roofs become quite soft in the extreme heat. If you walk on them, you take the chance of damaging the roofing shingles. Pros can hose the roofing surface and prevent damage, but that would be an experienced roofer. Otherwise, for the rest of us, wait for the temperatures to drop next week before getting on the roof.
