Before you hear about how great the new roof will look and how long it will last, you need to start with the basics. That means the roofing representative needs to cover the state requirements that ALL roofing companies must meet before providing and installing your new roof.

Before you hear about how great the new roof will look and how long it will last, you need to start with the basics. That means the roofing representative needs to cover the state requirements that ALL roofing companies must meet before providing and installing your new roof.

The first item you need to review and verify is the Certificate of Liability Insurance. You don’t need to be a lawyer to do this, but if you are unsure, you can call the Producer listed on the front of the certificate and confirm that the roofing company is currently insured. However, make sure you receive a copy of this liability certificate to keep with the bid.

Liability insurance covers the structure and assets that are on or part of the project. For example, a roll of felt paper rolls right off the roof and onto your new car or a bundle of roofing shingles now lie in your livingroom – who is going to pay? The roofers insurance covers your property and its contents from damage. Also, if there was someone in the car or in the livingroom when the items fell, it covers the medical expenses of someone who is not an employee injured on your property.

If you think your personal homeowners insurance will protect you, think again. It is a state requirement that the company you hire is insured. It is your responsibility that they have current and adaquate liability insurace. Choose an established company, the odds of an insurance nightmare is often much less likely.
